Dr. Juliana Herbertis a Professor of Biomedical Software Engineering at the Federal University of Health Sciences of Porto Alegre (UFCSPA), in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, where she co-leads the Space & Extreme Environment Research Center with Dr. Thais Russomano. Juliana has Master’s (1994) and Doctorate (1999) degrees in Computer Science, focused on Software Validation and Verification.
She participated in the creation of a Software Engineering Center – ESICenter Brazil – located at Unisinos University and connected to an international network through agreement between Unisinos and the European Software Institute (Bilbao, Spain). Juliana was Director of the ESICenter Brazil from 2002 to 2008, working with projects developed in 15 countries.
From 2008 to 2016, she was Director and Senior Consultant at Herbert Consulting, with projects related to the definition and quality assessment of software development processes, agile methods adoption, software validation and verification. Her role involved working at a national and international level with companies from Brazil and 9 other countries, and including formal agreements with institutions, such as the Software Engineering Institute of the Carnegie-Mellon University, USA, and the European Software Institute (Spain).
Juliana is currently a permanent Professor of the Postgraduate Program in Information Technology and Healthcare Management, at UFCSPA, Brazil. She also works with the Biomedical Informatics undergraduate course, teaching and leading research projects related to Software Engineering and Artificial Intelligence. In addition, she is an Associate Researcher at PEDECIBA-Informática, Universidad de la República in Uruguay, working with Master’s and PhD students. Her research interests are in biomedical software engineering, artificial intelligence applications, interaction design and space sciences. Juliana believes in science, evidence-based knowledge and how space science education can be used to conciliate skepticism and wonder!
