Dr. João Castrois a medical doctor specialising in internal medicine and intensive care, with experience in emergency and aerospace medicine. He graduated in Medicine from the Federal University of Health Sciences of Porto Alegre (1983), followed by his Medical Residency in Internal Medicine at Hospital de Clínicas, Porto Alegre (1983-1985). He subsequently accomplished a PhD in Medicine (2006) at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil (UFRGS), related to cardiopulmonary resuscitation in extreme environments, with part of his research being conducted on an ESA parabolic flight campaign.
For more than 30 years João Castro has worked in hospital intensive care and emergency medicine units, gaining huge experience in these areas. He further worked as a medical doctor for 18 years at the Ruben Berta Foundation/VARIG airline in the area of aviation medicine. He is currently a Professor at the School of Medicine PUCRS, where he also lectures for the Aeronautical Sciences course, being responsible for teaching aerospace medicine to student commercial pilots. In addition, he teaches on aviation medicine specialisation courses for airline pilots and aircrew. Dr Castro has also been involved in research and development activities for nearly 20 years at the Microgravity Centre, PUCRS, Brazil in the area of aerospace medicine and aeronautical sciences.
